Would floating lights at night be spirits?

hi, I was thinking about my childhood and the spooky house we lived in and how my mum was once completely freaked on three nights in succession when she woke and saw a really bright light hovering at the end of her bed. I read an article about an American Civil War site where hovering lights are often seen and are thought to be spirits of those who died. Anyone else experienced phenomena like this?
