The Bible does not encourage slavery. It simply asks that slaves who have been saved should make the best out of the situation that has been given to them. Before the Civil War, Southerners used to use these pages to justify their actions. That is simply not what those pages are advocating. It is along the same lines of "turn the other cheek."
